360° Narrative Story

This week, we are required to film a 360° narrative story that consists of at least five shots. The actor needs to move around or past the camera to drive the story. Yvonne and I decided to film a school day of Sally.

Sally is a female chick who is the fifth main member of LINE friends. Surprisingly, Sally gains lots of fans even she often acts as a background character. She has a pair of tiny black eyes, an orange beak, and a body with yellow feathers. She also has a pair of small feet. Although she is naive, Sally can be quite clever sometimes. Furthermore, she is also a bit cunning because of the lack of attention from her friends, such as intending to steal Brown's heart by sticking by his side.

The most interesting point for me from this project was figuring out how to hide from the 360° camera. 360° cameras can see everything around them, which presents both an opportunity and a challenge. Users can capture the entire environment while the camera makes it harder for the videographer to avoid being seen in the video. In class, when we covered the general rule of thumb — if you cannot see the camera, the camera cannot see you, I had not fully understood how it worked. In my last project, I failed to hide from the camera by kneeling under the camera.

From my research, if I wanted to avoid being seen in the shot, I will need to use a self-timer or remote shutter. However, since I am shooting a video, I can do without a self-timer or remote shutter by merely trimming the portion of the footage where I am triggering the shutter. So for this project, first, it is to put the 360 camera in the desired position. Then find a place where we can hide from the camera. In the shots below, we were standing behind the wall, the desk, the step handrail, and the flower bed, and carefully positioned ourselves to avoid being seen.

Click me to watch a school day with Sally. Have fun!
